There is some talk going on that ACT should fold and quit while they can and join National. Well for starters that would not go down well with the ACT and National Party members, and really what would it achieve?
In my opinion nothing for the right other than a National having the added brain power and expertise of Rodney Hide. Why would National want any of the EX ACT MP's that were not effective in the previous election?
As I said on Aaron's blog, It is what it is, and it is VERY SIMPLE. ACT and National are on basically the same side. It is not helping by arguing amongst ourselves. National will always be in the larger position unless something drastic changes. ACT will always be the rather loyal sidekick. They need to be distinct of each other and on the same note FRIENDLY towards each other. We are all waisting perfectly good energy on this topic, hence I will finish my post.

If they are basically on the same side, then why maintain two seperate parties when one is struggling so?
Well it is rather logical that there is a chance that they can rebuilt to a state that is better than it is now. Who would you propose as a strong and reliable coalition partner if ACT was to meld into National? As long as MMP is in effect ACT should remain seperate.
ACT should only remain seperate if they are a viable political entity. There's a question mark over that. I give them one year max to show they are ont he up and up, otherwise, it's really just a matter of time before voters realise that Epsom was a wasted tactical vote and Hide will not be able to deliver the five extra MPs he promised.

The rebuild will be strong. People learn from mistakes. The same mistakes should not happen twice. National has got more support over the previous election, but I am uncertain that they have a grasp on how MMP works..... To kill ACT off would be a disaster for the right.
I agree Rob. I think after today, it's pretty obvious that National failed to eat into that centre vote. And that is where election are won and lost
Well I hope that National also learn from their mistakes. ACT lost MP's and National gained some, so I am sure that while getting more seats is a good thing for Nats they still didn't win. It will probably give the radicals amongst the Nats more ammo to fling at ACT... The old tread on the weak theory. What they need to be doing is looking into their own problems and fix them before those whom are wet behind the ears poke their we noses into the ups and downs of another political parties aganda.
See how Aaron can't help himself, he reckons he has gone up in the world for leaving ACT.
National didn't win the debate at the election as they did not bite into Labours support, instead they took the soft option out and stole the supporters (and policies) off ACT in an attempt to win the election. For National to win next time they need to forget the ACT bashing and work harder on winning an election and actually changing the minds of Labour voters (who are not that different from National voters). That and realising that they will never rule on their own (or even consider doing so).
Clint - you contradict yourself so quickly. First you say that National "stole" voters and supporters from ACT. Then you say that Labour voters are no different from National voters. Much less th epoint that we didn't steal anything from ACT. We earned the right to these people's votes by giving them propositions and policies that they agreed with. Rodney Hide did much the same in Epsom - no-one owns these votes, except the individuals who cast them. And you accuse National people of being arrogant and blinkered?
