Under cover Dolphins

I read this interesting one in the NZ Herald today. It appears that one of the strangest stories to emerge from the ruins of Hurricane Katrina is a tale of military trained dolphins on the loose in the Gulf of Mexico.

The animals were reportedly being used by the US Navy to detect stray torpedoes and mines, and were controlled using signals transmitted to a neck harness. It is possible some were armed with toxic darts tied to their backs to immobilise terrorists or enemy agents. So not only do surfers have to watch out for Jaws and Man'o'war, but now flipper might mistake them for the swimming Osama and terminate them.

"If divers or windsurfers are mistaken for a spy or suicide bomber, they could fire," warned an accident investigator close to the US Government's marine fisheries service. All fun in the waters of the Gulf Coast.

I would never underestimate the power of the US Military.... Nothing would surprise me..... Nothing

John Banks considering running for Mayor in 2007

According to the NZ Herald, John Banks is considering a political comeback for the Auckland City mayoralty he lost by a whopping 19,016 votes to businessman Dick Hubbard a year ago.

It seems that most people are disappointed with the way Dick Hubbard is panning out as Mayor. Auckland seems to even be sliding backwards. At least John Banks was a strong leader who knew what he was doing.

Just like Arnold ( who knows what he is doing ), Hubbard was possibly voted in because of his celebrity status. Hubbard has failed and he needs to go.

Mr Banks a former National Cabinet minister, said he would decide in the next six to 12 months whether to run and if so would mount a 12-month campaign.

He said Mr Hubbard's first 12 months had been a disaster, with colossal rates increases.

Mr Banks said he was beaten fair and square by someone "who, frankly, offered a political fraud and has been uncovered".

.... As Pablo would say... " Bring back Banksie ".

Labour party looking into Rodney Hide's spending in Epsom.

According to the NZ Herald today, the Labour Party is investigating ACT leader Rodney Hide's spending in Epsom with a view to lodging a petition in the High Court. What this tells me is that they are concerned that there might be a revolt from the red, and they are knit picking in case Winston, the Maori Party, and Peter Dunn decide to go with National. They don't want ACT there to clinch the deal.

Mr Hide won the seat from National's Richard Worth by over 3000 votes, and brings to Parliament one other MP Heather Roy.

Should a petition be successful a by-election would be held in which Mr Hide would not be able to stand.

Labour Party president Mike Williams told NZPA local members in Epsom were looking into the spending. The party would make a decision by October 25 whether to proceed with the petition or not.

Rodney is not a silly person, and i'd be VERY surprised if there was any overspending in the election campaign by him or ACT. The signs went up later than Richard Worth's according to Aaron, and there was a lot of door knocking and energy focused on Epsom. Not something that really required spending. I think that Labour are barking up the wrong tree, and if they proceed with this, they will spend a lot of tax payers money on a whole lot of left wing spin.

Is there something bubbling with National?

Is the right going to form a government after all? According to the NZ herald today: National has renewed its overtures towards the Maori Party as it tries to frustrate Helen Clark's attempts to form a government.

Maori Party MPs yesterday confirmed talks with National had swung into gear again.

Co-leader Pita Sharples said there had been several meetings initiated by National "who seem to be having a discussion across the board in an effort to build up their numbers". He believed National was also talking with NZ First and United Future.

I am not really sure how the Maori Party and National would work together conidering that National was wanting to abolish the Maori seats, but where there is a will there is a way. It seems that the political parties know that if they back track slightly and join the right then NZ can have a government formed under the leadership of Dr Donald Brash, and NZ can steer away from the left.

United Future leader Peter Dunne said he had met National leader Don Brash after the election and again last week.

The numbers below show where we are. Do your calculations and figure out what is possible.

The Left

Labour 50
Greens 6
Progressives 1
Total: 57

The Right

National 48
Act 2
Total: 50

The Rest

New Zealand First 7
Maori Party 4
United Future 3

Tom got Katie pregnant....

According to the people magazine, Tom Cruise's fiancée, Katie Holmes, is pregnant with the couple's child, Cruise's spokesperson, Lee Anne DeVette said. Well well, what can I say..... Maybe he is not a man who does with other man then....

"Tom and Katie are very excited, and the entire family is very excited," says DeVette.

Cruise, who has two children, Connor, 10, and Isabella, 12, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman, began dating Holmes in mid-April. He proposed to her atop the Eiffel Tower in Paris in June. DeVette says there is no wedding date set.

DeVette would not comment on the baby's gender or say how far along the pregnancy is. The rep did say that Holmes, 26, "has never felt better."

Cruise, 43, is currently shooting Mission: Impossible 3 in Los Angeles.

Hmmm, that will cause some eyebrow raising in Hollywood.

A particularly good post by Cathy.

Cathy Odgers has done it again...... I think she should write a book, or even dare I say it...run for office one day..... Now I am sure she will deny wanting to do either, but a good suggestion none the less.

Moose in them there woods.....

According to the Otago Daily Times, A hunter says DNA tests have confirmed the existence of a Canadian moose in a remote part of Fiordland.

The results are the second since June 2001 to suggest at least one of the animals - introduced from North America in 1910 and last seen more than 30 years ago - is still very much alive. Evading the cameras much like Loch Ness.

Mr Tustin and his wife, Margie, collected the sample during a regular visit to the thickly wooded and steep area opposite Oke Island in October 2002.

Hamilton-based researchers Deer Improvement sent the Tustins' sample, the already tested Harper hair, and about 40 other samples to a forensic laboratory at Trent University in Ontario, Canada, this year.

The laboratory returned the results late last month and both samples were confirmed as having come from a moose, said Deer Improvement director Peter Gatley.

Ten Canadian moose were introduced to Fiordland's Supper Cove in 1910, but their population declined steadily under pressure from red deer. The last rumoured sighting was in 1971. Maybe some more should be added to boost the #'s

Moose had eluded cameras in the area but bedding spots and browsing and antler marks suggested up to 20 animals might live there, Mr Tustin said.

A Natural History NZ camera took a blurred image of a suspected moose in 1995.

NZ is UK's favourite place to visit.

According to the NZ Herald, Readers of London's Daily Telegraph newspaper have voted New Zealand as their favourite place on earth, for the second year in a row. Woo Hoo

More than 25,000 readers were polled in Britain's biggest survey of travel habits and the results were announced at the eighth Telegraph Travel Awards reception at the Royal Opera House in London. Nothing like good publicity for the land of the long white cloud.

"Affection for New Zealand owes much to the spectacular box office success of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was filmed there, but also to greater accessibility," the newspaper said. Well thank you Peter.

NZ is getting a lot of good publicity at the moment, and I say bring it on. Tourism is a great money earner for the country, and more of it is needed. Now if the corporate tax was only 30% or less, that would help get more investment into NZ.

Paris

According to CNN today, Paris Hilton has ended her five-month engagement to a Greek shipping heir, a celebrity magazine reported. I would have thought that after 5 months the male Paris would have been begging to get away and probably have broken it off anyways.

The celebutante broke off wedding plans with Paris Latsis, according to a report posted Friday on Us Weekly's Web site.

"I'm sad to announce that I've called off my engagement," Hilton told the magazine.

"Over the last couple months I've realized that this is the right decision for me," Hilton said.

"We remain best of friends, and I'll always love him," Hilton's statement added. "I hope people will respect my privacy during this emotional time".

I am wondering if this is even worth posting, but it really is amazing what the attraction people have to the woman that really is nothing but wealthy?

I bet there is more to this than we know.....

Election results...

The final results of the election after the special votes, has National loosing a seat and Helen Clark and Labour in the position to form a government. It shows me that if the right want to win, they will have to come up with a multi party plan to get a result that will allow National to form a government next time there is an election, with the likes of ACT and hopefully ACT only. Now is the time for BOTH National and ACT to rebuild and plan for an election that may not be too far away?

Westwood film festival

Last night I went to another function a the W with my friend Laurie. It was too celebrate the Westwood film festival and, as with the Katrina Hurricane function, they supplied fantastic food and cocktails. There was a photograph board at the gate so as everyone could pose and hope that they are in the next people mag. But I like to sneek in and out of these event without too much fuss, so we both declined photos.
The lady from the Bangles played music and even played Manic Monday which was cool. I spotted Mike Myers, and was thinking of turing into Austin Powers, but thought Ali G would be better. My plan was quashed when some other folks bumped in front of him and short of looking like a FREAK, I kept Ali G to myself.

Great night. Ended up at Renees afterwards.... Todd rolled up, Greg was there and Kelli, Ananda showed, and all was good.

LAX gun range

I went to the LAX gun range with Dr Craig Campbell's father, an ex NZ policeman. He told me that the guns they used when he was in the Police in NZ was the Smith and Wesson 38. The guns we shot yesterday were the 9mm glocks which I beleive the NZ police use now. It was a lot of fun and we all managed to be reasonably good at hitting the targets.

After finishing the shooting, we hopped in the car and the outside temperature was 36 degrees C. Clearly one of the hottest days of the year in LA. It is almost like earthquake weather, as it was not much higher than 20 the days before.

So I am waiting for the shaking.......... Hopefully I will not be in a highrise as that would cause extra issues with my ability to keep calm.

National swallowing ACT ?

There is some talk going on that ACT should fold and quit while they can and join National. Well for starters that would not go down well with the ACT and National Party members, and really what would it achieve?
In my opinion nothing for the right other than a National having the added brain power and expertise of Rodney Hide. Why would National want any of the EX ACT MP's that were not effective in the previous election?

As I said on Aaron's blog, It is what it is, and it is VERY SIMPLE. ACT and National are on basically the same side. It is not helping by arguing amongst ourselves. National will always be in the larger position unless something drastic changes. ACT will always be the rather loyal sidekick. They need to be distinct of each other and on the same note FRIENDLY towards each other. We are all waisting perfectly good energy on this topic, hence I will finish my post.

Greg Johnson concert at Aotea Center November 5th

Gregory is having a concert with the Auckland Philharmonia on November 5th. It should be a fantastic show. All the various musical instruments will certainly make for a different sound which will be great. I am planning on attending if the plane arrives in time, so go and get your tickets now and we can all enjoy it.

Time to support ACT

If you are happy that Rodney Hide won the Epsom electorate in the NZ elections, and if you are disappointed that ACT did not get the party vote support that you expected, then now is the time to step up and join ACT.

This is the time that the party needs to rebuild and your support is important. It is $10 to become a member of ACT and with your support ACT can rebuild and come back stronger next time. I encourage you to make a further donation over and above your membership. Everything helps.

Minotaur rocket over LA

I was on the deck speaking to a friend of mine Regan from NZ, and I saw this flying object flying close to the house with some sort of technicolored fuel or spray coming out of the back of it. The spray was like a rainbow and it was spreading over the city. It was dark so I knew that what I had just witnessed was not normal. It was not a airplane, and it was making no noise. Well I was thinking that I was viewing a top secret military aircraft, a out of control UFO, or maybe some sort of weapon being unleashed over the city by terrorists. Some photos were taken and I began ringing anyone I knew who was involved with aircraft or planes.
My friend Ananda said that what I saw was reminiscent of rocket fuel and he predicted that something was fired from Vandenburg Air Force Base.

Well thank goodness he was right...After some rather frantic searching of the internet I found the launch schedule for Vandenburg AFB and it was indeed a Minotaur Rocket...

HMMM.... and I was planning my exit to Tahoe.

This photo from the LA times with the rocket powering over LA.

Uncle Jim to the rescue

According to the NZ Herald today, Cabinet minister Jim Anderton and his wife Carole has been commended by police after their quick actions saved the life of a homeless man.

Power to them, Carole is a very nice person who assisted my Grandmother in Christchurch before she passed away a couple of years ago, so I am thankful for that. Although I don't care for Jims political views, he is also a effective MP and pleasant person.

The 67-year-old Progressives leader and his wife Carole found the man with blood gushing from his arm in the middle of a Sydenham street in Christchurch as they drove home about 9pm on Tuesday.

The man had cut an artery when he jumped through the window of a Selwyn St home to escape an attack. He then stumbled about 100m - as blood gushed from his arm - down the street, and into the path of the Andertons' car.

Mr Anderton used Carole's possum and merino fur scarf and his own silk tie as a tourniquet to stem the bleeding, while his wife called emergency services. The Andertons also used a bundle of clothes they were planning to deliver to a charity shop to further slow the bleeding.

Mr Anderton said he had feared for the man's life. "He was losing blood like Niagara Falls. I didn't think he was going to live," he said.

The man passed out before emergency services arrived. He was taken to Christchurch Hospital.

Police have said the man could have died if the Andertons had not come to his rescue.

"He was really lucky members of the public assisted him and tried to stop the bleeding," said Detective Sergeant William McIvor.

The man was discharged from hospital yesterday after surgery to repair the cut artery. Lucky guy I say..... Cheers to the Andertons for their quick assistance.

W Westwood Katrina hurricane charity event

Last night I went to the W in Westwood with Nicolas and Gregory. It was a great charity event for the victims of the Katrina Hurricane in New Orleans and surrounding states. I found myself standing next to Randy Gerber, and I must say his wife Cindy Crawford certainly looks a lot nicer in person than on the television. John Goodman was also there and Jason Biggs from American Pie fame amongst others.. It was a great evening for a fantastic cause. I won the first two years of Seinfeld on DVD, and Nicolas won a coach bag. Amber will be happy, as it doesnt suit him and I would guess it will be a nice present for her. Well worth going....

Leah and Simon Petty

Went to the wedding function of Leah and Simon Petty last night. It was a great event, with the bride looking beautiful and the groom in the full swing of singing lullabys to his bride..... Everyone from Renee's was there except we were all dressed up. It was particularly brilliant to see Mr Sid Jordon and Gregory Johnson wearing ties. Congrats Leah and Simon.

Rodney Hide wins Epsom

Congrats Rodney. Brilliant result.

L.C. Plum at the Viper Room

Went out to the Viper Room in Hollywood to watch Del, Zac and Eric from L.C.Plum strut their stuff and play some brilliant music. The Viper Room is a bit of a legend place, so I took the liberty of having a nice soothing JD and Coke while enjoying the atmosphere and music. Be sure to check out the web site at www.lcplum.com

Vote ACT in the elections

On Saturday 17th September give ACT your party vote. If you live in Epsom, as well as the party vote, also give Rodney Hide of ACT the electorate vote. DO this, and enjoy your freedom and tax cuts in a National led government with ACT as a partner. If Winston is involved ACT is the perfect partner to keep him honest..... Vote ACT.

Wicked beer

According to stuff.co.nz, A German brewer has concocted what he says is the world's strongest beer, a potent drink with an alcohol content of 25.4 per cent that is served in a shot glass. Phew that is stronger than wine, and about the same as Malibu.

"Everyone who has tried it is enthusiastic. It tastes like a quirky mixture of beer and sherry," said Bavarian brewer Harald Schneider.

Schneider, who lives in southern Germany where beer is a tradition, said his beer fermented for 12 weeks for an alcohol content twice that of Germany's other strongest beers.

"People will only be able to drink two or three glasses, otherwise they'll drop like flies," he said. So much for having a quiet beer.

Schneider expects the holders of the world's strongest beer, the Boston Beer Company, to put up a fight.

"I'm pretty sure the Americans have something up their sleeve." Like a molotov cocktail..???

September 11th 2005

It has been 4 years since Manhattan was attacked by nasty people....

Lets not forget those who were lost.

Swagger

Went to Hotel Cafe in Hollywood last night to watch Greg Johnson play some good kiwi tunes. As per usual Ted Brown was supporting Greg along with Sid and Malcolm from the band Minibar.
The Hotel Cafe has just been extended and is now twice the size. The acoustics were great and the show was fantastic. They even played Swagger which is a brilliant song, a favourite of mine.
Previously they only sold beer at the Hotel Cafe, but must have extended their liquor licence as it was nice to have a small vodka 7up while listening to the show.
If you are ever in LA and Greg is playing Hotel Cafe, I recommend it.

Will Fernando do it?

Will 24 yr old Fernando Alonso from the Renault F1 team (Not Airbus) be the youngest F1 Drivers champion after tomorrows race?
You'll have to watch and see.......

**** Update ****

No he didn't. Kimi won the race followed by Fernando. There is now only 1 point preventing Fernando from being the world champ for 2005.
The race was great...Lots of rain and lots of crashes.

Epsom Electorate

It seems that there is some conflicting polls out there saying that Rodney Hide of ACT is ahead in the race for the Epsom seat, or a long way behind. Like most of the polls out there at the moment, they dont make much sence.

Fact of the matter is that if you have an opinion you should VOTE. If you want a National lead government vote for Rodney Hide.... If you want a Labour lead government and it comes to the wire.... Vote Richard Worth of National.

Confused....well most people are. If ACT get below 5% of the party vote and Rodney loses the seat it is bye bye ACT, and one less partner for National. If Rodney wins the seat and they get a reasonable percentage of the vote, then Rodney will be coming back, and a few of his ACT MP's will be back too. This will give National some more opportunities and if the race is as close as they say it is important to consider.

The National candidate Richard Worth is 16th on the list. He is GUARANTEED to get back into parliament.

If you live in Epsom and you want a right wing government in New Zealand, vote tacticly, Give Rodney Hide and ACT 2 ticks, and enjoy your tax cut.

Idiot rap star of the week Kanye West

Kanye West, some rappist that I have never heard of has caused controversy by attacking President George W Bush's handling of the New Orleans crisis live on American television.

The rapper-producer was taking part in a telethon for the victims of Hurricane Katrina when he spoke out about the treatment black people in the disaster. Good on him for offering his time. All people of New Orleans need assistance and help at this time.

"I hate the way they treat us in the media, when you see a black family it says they're looting when you see a white family it says they're looking for food," said West before personally targeting the President...

Well it is unfortunate that most of the poor people in New Orleans happen to be black, and choose to stay in the area. Anyone with the ability too left the area upon being asked / ordered too go. If it happens that when the tv cameras are rolling that the only people looting are black people, that means one of two things. Either they are the only people looting, or the cameras happen to be in the worse hit area which may be a black neighbourhood. In either case.... What person in their right mind is going to loot a store in front of a live news camera? Idiocy. This is not George Bush's fault. Have a go at the tv stations that are filming the news Kanye and keep your mouth shut.

"George Bush doesn't care about black people," he declared adding that America is set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible", Billboard reports. Another load of crap. America was not 100% set up for anything like this. It is not the Presidents fault, the National Guard and the Governors of the respective states were first on hand. George has fast tracked funding, offered support and pledged further assistance. He is not such a figure that he can physically stop a hurricane.... Kanye smarten up.

West then praised the Red Cross’ efforts saying they were doing “everything they can”.

NBC, the network that aired the programme, quickly distanced itself from West, declaring he had “departed from the scripted comments that were prepared for him”, while some American commentators attacked his comments.

Sounds like this know it all rapper needs to hop on a plane and go to the area and volunteer to help. George has been there 3 or 4 times this week.

It is always easy to pull a Mike Moore and critisize the authorities, but when it comes to doing something useful Kanye needs to use as much of the brainpower that he has to do something positive. Have some respect Kanye.

Apple comes to the rescue

So I updated my computers ram the other day. It turned out that it may have been faulty and my beloved imac has been inadvertedly crashing. I turned on my itunes which had just under 1000 songs, and the computer decided to dump 600 of those. I was slightly peterbed for want of a better word. So the company replaced the ram again yesterday, and managed to find most of the songs in the memory except for the purchased music from Apple. I only use itunes to download music these days. It is $0.99 per tune and there is a fantastic selection. I e-mailed Apple and asked what to do. They told me where to find the songs, but they were not there, so I emailed back and asked what to do. They said check the itunes purchase receipts on my account and verify that I had brought the songs. Well I had, so I e-mailed them back and they gave me a one off exemption to get my purchased music back without paying twice. Very good of them. I am impressed with the quick responce and ease of replacement...... This is why I love Apple. Now I have been told to back up my music files...That is next on the agenda.

Who won the $15.2 million?

A lucky Aucklander is $15.2 million richer after beating the 1-in-30 million odds last night to win New Zealand's largest ever lottery prize.

The winning ticket - made up of $14.5 million from Powerball and a first division win of $733,068 - was bought at Amigo's Paper Power & Lotto in Mt Roskill.

Now if you brought your ticket at Amigo's, then it is time to check your numbers. Good luck.

Boosted the i Mac

Today I bumped up the ram of my G4 i Mac from 256 to 1GB. I also treated her to some new Harmon / Kardon speakers along with sub woofer, and the Mighty Mouse from Mac. All is good, and all I need now is the i Pod Nano and the Motorola ROKR which plays itunes on the phone and I will be set for a while. Excellent Apple.

El Al Security at LAX

So I was plane spotting today with my buddy Glen at LAX as I sometimes do, and this El Al ( Israel Airlines ) vehicle pulls up. I was wondering what they were doing hovering around eyeballing me, but didnt think too much of it. All of a sudden a gentleman with an El Al uniform comes to the car and in a thick Iraeli accent asks us what we are doing at the airport.

I informed him that I was looking at planes, and he said so you are a plane spotter? I said yes. He said have a good day and walked of and hopped on his CB keeping a close eye on my car. Now I wasn't too comfortable with that confrontation, and I found it really odd that I would be questioned by an employee of a foreign airline.....

Next thing you know there are police cars driving up and down the runway more so than usual, baggage handling trucks driving by slowly glearing over to the car and the guy was still there yabbering on his CB.

All of a sudden an El Al Airlines 767 pulls onto the runway and slowly comes to the end of the runway to where we were, with a virtual police escort. I know that most of the time El Al does not have a steady schedule and sort of tells it's passengers to be at the airport at a certain time and wing it if I may, but I had never seen this sort of thing unless it was a head of state traveling.

As the plane is spooling up its engines and I am watching with amazement, the El Al employee comes back to the car and asks me where I am from. He had spotted the NZ flag on the back of my car, as he was prying over it with his eagle eyes, and wanted to talk about NZ.

He had been there for 3 months he said and loved it. Glen was wondering if he was packing heat, but didn't want to ask. It turns out that every time a plane with an Israeli Flag on it is preparing to take off and land, they ramp up the security dramatically for the safety of the passengers. He waited till the plane had taken off and was out of sight then he bid his farewells.

I must say, the employee turned out to be polite and nice and I am VERY impressed with the security precautions that El Al take for the sake of safety. They take it very seriously.

Would I fly El Al......? Probably not out of preferance, I'd be feeling a bit uncomfortable with all the excess security.... Having said that no other airline goes to the same lengths as El Al.

Donald will bring back the Knighthoods

If Donald Brash is elected PM of NZ in the upcoming election, he is planning on restoring Knighthoods. Currently if you get awarded the equivilent it is a Order of New Zealand. Who has one of those? There is something good about a Sir or a Dame, it is traditional.... Why not keep both awards ONZ and Knighthoods and keep everyone happy.

Sir Puntiki.

National Guard coming to get the looters.

The whole place is turning to crap. The city of New Orleans is under water, people are homeless and lost, and a percentage of heartless people are taking true advantage of the situation.

Murders, rapings, bashings, and LOOTINGS are rampant. Now I can understand if you are washed out of your home, if there is no power, no food, and no water available. I can understand that you would probably make your way to the food store and help yourself to some food and liquid to keep yourself alive. That is acceptable...You are trying to live.

It is not going to save your life if you help yourself to a new TV, stereo, pair of shoes, cd's, dvd's, cars, weapons, alcohol, cooking utensils, or red rubber jumpsuit etc. That is theft and you are scum. Prepare to be taken care of.

The National Guard is coming to town to stop this and people are going to be shot on site. It is horrible that the Mayor of New Orleans had to pull law enforcement away from helping innocent people hurt by the storm, to take control of the looting.

Scum even shot at a helicopter today that was flying in with Red Cross to save lives.

This is unacceptable behavour.

Looters and scum should and will need to be taken care of quickly. Bang Bang.

GP Masters

A new racing league is being created. It is called Grand Prix masters, and it consists of ex F1 drivers who are over 45, have raced for a F1 team or teams for at least 2 seasons, and have been out of the sport of F1 for at least 2 years.
Now I am a massive F1 fan, and the thought of Nigel Mansell racing a 200 mph car in anger against the likes of Alan Prost, Stefan Johansson, Alan Jones and Rene Arnoux amongst others, is particularly fascinating for me..... The first race is on November the 13th 2005 in South Africa at the Kyalmai race track, and I hope that the event is properly televised throughout the world. I want to watch it live.
The F1 season finishes in October and I am predicting that Fernando will win the title, but regardless of that..... There is now something interesting to watch between F1 seasons....Woopee.

Will National pull through?

Labour's lead has been cut to 4.3 points over National according to the NZ Herald today.

National has virtually halved Labour's lead within a week, cutting a 9.3 point gap last week to 4.3 this week, according to the latest Herald DigiPoll survey.

Polling for this survey began on Thursday last week and finished on Wednesday this week. In the segment taken before Monday's race-related speech of National leader Don Brash, Labour had stretched 10.9 points ahead of National to 46.8 per cent.

But in the segment taken after the speech in Whangarei on Monday, Labour had slumped and National was ahead of Labour by three points, on 43.2.

Labour is on 43.4 (down 1.9 on last week's poll) Still ahead but slowly going down.

National is on 39.1 (up 3.1) Starting to breath down the neck of Hell-en.

New Zealand First 6.6 (up 0.5) Gaining, but is that a good thing?

Greens 5 (down 1.4) Hopefully they will continue to drop and disappear.

Act 2.1 (up 1.2) Brilliant news for ACT. Momentum is building. Watch this space.

United Future 1.7 (up 0.4) Might help if seat is won.

Maori Party 1.2 (down 1) Droping like a lead balloon.

Progressives 0.1 (down 0.5) Jim and his charisma is not pulling through.

Translated into seats in the House, Labour and the Progressives would be able to form a coalition with the Greens, provided that the Progressives win a seat, - who would just make it to Parliament by a whisker - or New Zealand First.

Act would disappear altogether but may be slightly heartened by a marked improvement in the second segment of this week's poll to 3.2 points. They will be back... Momemtum is building. A good result for ACT. Positive results.

On today's poll, National would not be able to form a government at all. Bugger. Work needs to be done on the centre right. It is close but no cigar as yet. The hard yards need to be done and done again until the day before the election. Victory is in sight for the centre right.

Thanks George

According to CNN. The Bush administration will release oil from federal petroleum reserve to help refiners affected by Hurricane Katrina, Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman said Wednesday.

The move, which was expected later in the day, is designed to give refineries a temporary supply of crude oil to take the place of interrupted shipments from tankers or offshore oil platforms affected by the storm.

The U.S. Minerals Management Service said Tuesday that 95 percent of the Gulf of Mexico's oil output was out of service. Oil prices surged back above $70 in European markets on Wednesday but slipped quickly to $69.56 after disclosure of the decision involving the release of supplies from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Eight refineries were shut down due to Katrina -- half of them producing gasoline.

The government's emergency petroleum stockpile -- nearly 700 million barrels of oil stored in underground salt caverns along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast -- was established to cushion oil markets during energy disruptions.

It probably wont lower the price of gasoline, but it may prevent it form going higher for the time being.... Way to go George.....

Petrol prices are out of control

When I first moved to Los Angeles in March 2002, the average price of gas per gallon was $1.50. With the higher octane fuels it was about $1.85. Everyone was shocked when it went over $2.... Well I filled up my car yesterday at $3.15 per gallon. It is getting out of control. The cost of a barrel of oil is around $71 today... If it gets much higher then I call upon George W Bush to open the US oil reserves and help us all.
The record high price seems to have hit the March 1981 historical high price of $3.08 per gallon (1981 price adjusted for inflation using 2005 dollars). Airline tickets are increasing, wall-mart's bottom line is getting scrubbed, and I dont like paying over $40 to fill my tank. Just as the automotive companies are bringing out some powerful vehicles, this happens.....crap.

Start drilling in Alaska boys.

Who will be the next James Bond?

Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, producers of the James Bond films, and MGM announced that Martin Campbell will direct CASINO ROYALE, the 21st film in the 007 franchise.

This is Campbell's second time as helmer of a James Bond film. In 1995 he directed the hit GOLDENEYE which introduced Pierce Brosnan to the role of 007 with great success.

Martin Campbell was born in NZ and moved to UK in 1966 to begin his successful carreer as a top knotch director.

The question that really begs to be answered is... Who will be the next James Bond?

A political party with some balls. ACT.

Tuesday, 30 August 2005

ACT will end New Zealand’s failed 30-year experiment of being nice to prisoners, ACT Corrections spokesman Stephen Franks said today.

ACT Leader Rodney Hide and Mr Franks today launched ACT’s prison and punishment policy outside Rimutaka Prison, Wellington.

“ACT will deliberately make prisons unpleasant. There will be no more resort conditions. If it takes hard labour then so be it.

“The theory that if we are nice to criminals for long enough they might be nice back to us has failed. Prison is to punish – not cure. The sickness theory of crime buries personal responsibility for the choice between good and evil and right and wrong.

“New Zealand has high crime and high prison rates. Criminals can gamble on there not being enough police to catch them and they know they will get feeble sentences.

“Kiwis are sick of this touchy feely attitude to criminals. ACT will ensure prisons are safe but so unpleasant that no one will want to go back,“ Mr Franks said.

In addition, ACT will:

Reject the UN rule that prohibits hard labour and says that being imprisoned is enough punishment.

Remove voting rights from all prisoners.

Return discretionary authority to staff to allow them to reward and punish prisoners for good or bad behaviour.

Beef up the Police Complaints Authority to investigate prisoner abuse complaints.

Abolish financial windfall awards to prisoners for alleged human rights breaches.

Restore the power to judges to choose punishments to fit the crime, including the type of prison and where, when and how community sentences are served.

Make home detention become home and work detention, confined to people who are in full time work or training.

Reinstate private sector prison managers, especially to establish new youth prisons.

Center right have work to do

The Labour party is still ahead in the polls. It seems that the center right has some serious work to do. It also looks like Winston and Don are reluctant to work together leaving ACT as the ideal partner for National. Problem is that National is seen as the innovator with a lot of these new policies that ACT has been pushing for years, and unsavvy voters think that ACT and National are one in the same. National is taking votes from the oxygen needed to form government. ACT is also having difficulty making the 5% threshold at this stage because of the National vote drive. Now anything is possible and momentum is building for ACT, but if the stratagies have not been planned well between the parties of the centre right, then we may well see another 3 years of Hell-en.

Cartoon cut out

I found these cartoon cut outs on www.stuff.co.nz They were created by Murray Web and we are all invited to print them out and use them as necessary. I suggest that to help ACT build profile so as they reach the 5% mark and win Epsom electorate....Print out the cartoon of Rodney and wear it...... WOO HOO.

Bob Jones on MMP

This is Bob Jones's idea on MMP and the upcoming election according to the NZ Herald..

Here's what's historically unique about this election. For the first time ever, there's no interest in individual candidates and likely close electorate contests. It's taken four MMP elections to shed the habits of the past. In the pre-MMP era, winning government could sometimes turn on half a dozen closely contested seats - but no longer, which is a pity as it's removed much of the interest from elections.

The only exceptions are in seats where, inexplicably, often high-profile candidates have opted not to go on the list. John Tamihere is a case in point. His Maori Party rival Pita Sharples will almost certainly enter Parliament on the party vote even should he lose to Tamihere.

If Tamihere loses, then not being on the list, he's out. It's quite possibly his best vote-seeking argument.

MMP has removed the former ground-level slog from politics, all of which has led to a plethora of parties.

Produce 500 names, call yourself a party and you're on the ballot-paper and entitled to free television time.

All elections flush up nondescript show-off types. They exchange the humiliation of receiving only a handful of votes for a fleeting place in the public eye, before returning to well deserved obscurity.

The Australians have a term, "the donkey vote" - because even a donkey would receive some votes through voter error or ignorance.

But now, with no media focus on individual electorate contests, that lunatic fringe candidate phenomenon has been replaced by lunatic fringe parties.

I watched in amazement, the one-hour free television time party broadcasts as the last 20 minutes were given over to the nutter parties, all allocated a minute each.

God help me if Social Credit, now calling themselves The Democrats, didn't re-emerge, regurgitating old film of their glory days a quarter of a century ago. Will they ever die off decently?

Still, they provided some comic relief in the 1970s, especially their annual conferences which drew the toupee-topped Waynes and moon-faced Sharlenes from small town New Zealand, turning up in their Crimplene safari suits and Skodas to listen to the demented ravings of wild-eyed monetary reform fanatics.

Then up popped the Alliance malcontents with gloomy film footage of what they represent - namely street protests and striking workers. These Alliance misanthropes don't need votes; they need pre-frontal lobotomies, or at the very least, a damn good flogging for having such a bleak outlook on life.

Next up, a couple of scruffs took turns chanting how they would wipe out the bureaucracy, taxes et al - these being the Libertarians. No lads, you won't do that, or indeed anything with your lives, unless you toss away your Ayn Rand bibles and get on with actually living.

After that, an elderly woman seated beside a piano quaveringly urged support for her 99-seat parliament proposal. Many would agree with her but not with their vote as it would be wasted. This is no way to achieve constitutional change.

Best of all was a Fat Buggers Party, or I assume that was its intended purpose as it consisted of group shots of obese supporters and there was no coherent rationale proffered.

Still, they were happy fatties, which you certainly can't say for the miserable Alliance losers.

They're wasting their time, though, as Parekura Horomia has the fat vote wrapped up for Labour, notwithstanding National's ploy in promoting Gerry Brownlee to deputy leader.

All of this raises a common misjudgment made by single-issue enthusiasts. Whatever their cause - be it hunting, fatness or left-handedness - they pin a naive faith on fellow hunters, fatties and left-handed people to vote for them.

But they don't. If they did, Peter Dunne would long since have started a two-legged people's party and would be Prime Minister by now.

I wish Bob Jones was P.M it would be classic.

What is the deal with ANZ Airpoints?

I am rather chagrined to find out that on my lastest trip to NZ, Air New Zealand decided not to credit my flight with airpoints...... I have been an airpoints member for many years and I am working on getting the gold status, as it is helpful in getting to the front of the line for check in, security and boarding. When I travel as much as I do around the USA it literaly saves hours of time and makes collecting all of the airpoints worthwhile.

I went to Flight centre here in LA and asked my trusty travel agent to please get me a good deal on ANZ to NZ return with airpoints. It was all organised and the flight prices were good so I brought two return tickets to NZ so as I could have my birthday there in November.

When I was in NZ I decided that I will bump myself up to business class back to LA using some of the points I already have. When I rang up the nice and polite lady told me that I am not being credited for this flight and because of the booking fare, I was not eligable to upgrade to business class with my already earned points.

So I am not liking what I hear and I am aware that I have brought another ticket in the same class for November travel..... Rather useless to me when I need a good chunk more airpoints to earn the gold status.

I spoke to my trusty travel agent upon my return to USA and mentioned the delemma. He checked his computer and he said that there was nothing in the computer that says there is to be no airpoints credited...... I rang Air New Zealand again and they said that all ticketing classes above T..... so U,V,W,X,Y and Z would be airpoints tickets and all below would not be...... They said he should know, he said they didnt make it clear. I beleive him, as he has no reason to tell fibs.

So trusty travel agent left a message yesterday to say there is no airpoints for the last flight, but he is in a good position to get me credited for the flight in November. We will see how good he really is...... Air New Zealand should make it VERY CLEAR to travel agents which tickets are and are not eligable for airpoints. I would fly Air Tahiti Nui for half the price again if I knew what I know now.

Looks like I need to make a side trip to London for Howards house warming party, on a T and above class ticket to offset the lack of points for the last flight.....

Thanks Air New Zealand.

ACT ramping up

The ACT campaign headquarters for the Epsom electorate in Nuffield Street is getting a bit of a makeover according to www.rodneyhide.com Rodney is running for the seat and aggressively campaigning for the party vote. ACT need to win a seat or get 5% of the party vote to stay in parliament. The publics awareness of the party is picking up as ACT is the most logical party to stand side by side with the National party in a clan slate government. Give ACT your party vote and reap the rewards after the election.

Did you know Jerry Seinfeld was 51?

According to CNN today: Jerry Seinfeld and his wife, Jessica, have a new addition to the family.

A son, Shepherd Kellen Seinfeld, was born Monday, AP Radio reported. The couple, who were married in 1999, have a 2-year-old son, Julian, and a 4-year-old daughter, Sascha.

A call to Seinfeld's publicist wasn't immediately returned Thursday.

The 51-year-old comedian has in the past worked babies into his standup routine: "Make no mistake about why these babies are here -- they are here to replace us."

Way to go Jerry....

LA Mayor having trouble keeping promises

According to Fox News: Nearly two months since his inauguration as the first Latino mayor of Los Angeles in more than 100 years, Antonio Villaraigosa is facing the daunting and expensive task of delivering on his campaign promises.

Curbing crime, fixing public education, planting one million trees and reducing traffic on the nation's most overcrowded highways were hefty promises to make, and they all carry hefty price tags for a city already $300 million in debt.

"I'm never going to settle for mediocrity. I'm always going to set the bar high, as we should. If the leader of the city doesn't set the bar high then, who will? That's what people want us to do," said Villaraigosa, who was sworn in on July 1 as the state's 41st mayor.

While Villaraigosa has lofty goals, political analysts say even small successes will pay off politically.

"Baby steps will do, baby steps forward because a lot of people feel that we've been taking large steps backwards in the past few years. There's a very tremendous disillusionment with government in general," said political analyst Allan Hoffenblum.

But even baby steps don't come cheap, and Villaraigosa has already reluctantly raised the possibility of higher taxes.

"I'm open to that but first I want to continue to find money within our own budget. People need to see we're going to live within our means," he said.

The mayor is definitely still in his honeymoon stage with Los Angelinos. How long it lasts might depend on how many promises he's able to fulfill without raising taxes.

All the while, his successes and failures are likely being watched closely by the Democratic Party, which is looking for a rising Latino politician to place in the national spotlight..... Maybe it will be Villaraigosa for Governor in the near future?

Updated my website

I updated my website with lots of new photo's. One of them is this.....

Check it out.

West LA..... Back home.

I am back in California. It has been a great couple of weeks traveling from LA to NY, over to Denver, back to LA, up to Tahoe, then down to Auckland and Queenstown NZ. From there I thought it was going to be a quiet couple of weeks, but I headed back to LA and then without any notice, I was on the United flight to Denver, and then a 2 hour drive to Beaver Creek. I had a great time in Beaver Creek, and managed to get some work done for the house as well as get back to my favorite restaurant in Vail " The Left Bank ". It really is the best French restaurant out of France. The height in Beaver Creek is over 9000 feet, and I found myself huffing and puffing while climbing the stairs. You really need to get aclimatised before exercising.....and drink lots of water as it is very dry.
On the drive back to the airport this morning Nick and I passed through the Eisenhower Tunnel which is 11158 feet high at it's highest point. There was thunder and lightening right there amongst us, it made for an interesting drive. Glad we were not struck. Would have messed my hair doooo.
So back to the office tomorrow.............

Off to Beaver Creek, Colorado today

I am off to Colorado with Nicolas in 6 hours. Bit of a spur of the moment type situation, but will be good to get all the business with the renovations of the Beaver Creek house completed.... Hope I dont get jet lag, as I am still on New Zealand time.

Back in LA

Had a brilliant flight back on Air New Zealand 747-400. I slept most of the way, so all is good. I am disappointed that for some reason I am not getting airpoints for this flight, but at least it wasn't too expensive. Thanks to Mum and Dad for the loan of the car, Pablo and Mara for the use of your house, Nick and Amber for the great party and hospitality, and Moo for dropping me to the airport and purchasing a couple of Coronas, and Gregory for collecting me from LAX. Back to the grind now. I will update the website with new photo's soon. Later.

Good night out

Had a rather large night out starting at the Auckland Club for dinner. From there we proceeded to Denim Bar in Parnell and I managed to get my Feijoa 42 below with apple juice, a Harvey Wallbanger, a lychee martini, and to top it off a bottle of DOM. It was great to see everyone that turned up and all I can say is that I do have a bit of a headach right now. Pablo is not feeling 100% and Mara Honey was not excited when she had to let me in the front door as Pablo forgot to leave the key out, but thanks MH.
Off to see Big Balls Barham at Coutts now, then my favorite Yum Cha with Pete, and Racie. Moo is taking me to the airport, as he forgot to come to Denim last night...... Back to LA today.

Stoned Cow

According to the NZ Herald today:-)

Russia's long winter will just fly by for a herd of Russian cows which will be fed confiscated marijuana over the cold months.

Drug workers said they adopted the unusual form of animal husbandry after they were forced to destroy the sunflowers and maize crops that the 40 tonnes of marijuana had been planted among, Novye Izvestia daily newspaper reported.

"There is simply no other way out. You see, the fields are planted with feed crops and if we remove it all the cows will have nothing to eat," a Federal Drugs Control Service spokeswoman for the Urals region of Sverdlovsk told the paper.

"I don't know what the milk will be like after this." Probably very potent and sought after by Green Party voters.

Drug use in Russia took off with the decline of the Soviet Union and police have been fighting drug smugglers -- often shipping heroin from Afghanistan - for years.

Such large hauls are relatively common, although they are normally burned.

I think that there is something to this. They have Kobe beef in Japan, and they now have a different meaning for Pot roast in Russia.

Coronet Peak

I had a fantastic time in Queenstown for Ambers birthday. It was great to catch up with a lot of old school friends and have fun. I managed to grab the airplane microphone on the way down to Queenstown to sing happy birthday to Amber. It was the biggest audience I have had in my singing career 138. HA.

The weather has been spectacular since arriving in NZ. We all went skiing on Coronet Peak on Sunday, and I managed to pick it up after 16 years of not being on skiis. I did bale over twice, but all I did was get a bit of snow on my jacket, so that was fine.

Back in Auckland now. At Pablo and Mara's place about to go out and venture around this fine city. Drinks in Parnell on Wednesday night and back to LA on thursday.

Leaders debate

The NZ leaders debate is on tv3 at 730pm tonight. The general election is to be held on September 17th. Rodney Hide of ACT is said to be lucky to have been invited on the show, as ACT has been polling lower than previous elections. Maybe he is lucky, but he is a great politician with credibility, who along with his party ACT, would make an ideal coalition partner for Mr Donald Brash and the National Party. The public will get good idea of what and who they will be voting for after the show. I am looking forwards to the polling results tomorrow. Go Rodney.

Peter Dunne and Uncle Jim Anderton are a bit put out that thay were not invited to the leaders debate. They think that if ACT is there then they should be too. They have taken the matter to court for an urgent decision. I would be surprised if a Judge makes a decision for a private company, but it is creating good publicity for the show none the less.

Omaha, North Island, New Zealand

I arrived in NZ at long last. Pablo picked me up from the airport and Mara Honey was there too. We went back to Pablo's place and I met Hobson Bhatnagar who is the cutest wee West Highland terrier. I got a photo which I will place on the website when I get back to LA.

From there I went to the bank and got stung on the exchange rate, but at least the US $ is worth a bit more than the NZ$, so I came out on top I guess.
I went to my old place of work...Century 21 Remuera and caught up with the team, and had a coffee with boss man David Roderick Jones.... Was good to see everyone.

I was a but dubious of driving here as it is the opposite side of the road to the USA, but I managed to evade an accident yesterday while I drove from Remuera to Massey to see Gino Young, then to Greenhithe to see my brother Ian and Sister in Law Debs, then to Silverdale to see Ambee and Nick, then home to Omaha to see my parents.

Dads is calling out that breakfast is ready now...which is nice, just like the old days.....

Bartley, Riaz, Scott, Greg and their wifes and children are coming up for dinner tonight...Fish and chips... Yummy.

Back from Tahoe... Off to NZ

I had a brilliant trip to Lake Tahoe with Greg. It is about 500 miles door to door from my place, and it made for a interesting 7 hour drive. The house on Shoshone is beautiful and the atmosphere at Squaw Valley was great. Greg was infatuated with seeing a bear or two, so we drove around in the forest but alas, they must have been somewhere else when we were looking. He set out some food hoping that they would come along in the night, but it appeared that Cloe the beautiful black Alsation managed to get it first. We went to Reno NV and managed to win and lose a small amount of money. We had a famous buffet dinner and had a good feed before heading back to the house to continue the bear entrapment, after driving around the city a bit. Reno is not really anything like Vegas........ There is nothing like Vegas. I am now getting ready to go to NZ tomorrow. I will try my hand at skiing in Queenstown, and hopefully I will not break anything.

Party vote for ACT

Lower taxes? More personal and property freedom? A fairer legal system? Give ACT your party vote. If you live in Epsom and you want to have 2 MP's represent you give Rodney Hide your electorate vote too.

Photo of Ground Zero

I took this photo of Ground Zero on July 26th 2005. It is a lot bigger than it looks, and many many people were there on the day. It is hard to fathom what it would have been like on 9-11.

Back in Los Angeles

Drove from Beaver Creek Colorado, through the mountains narrowly missed getting struck by lightening, made the plane in time for it to be delayed. Got back to LA 1.5 hours late and I am now preparing to go to Lake Tahoe California to check on a house. Going to take Greg, so he can bring his guitar and practice some songs for his upcoming super album.....

The Left Bank, Vail Colorado

I had a brilliant dining experience last night. I went to The Left Bank French restaurant in Vail, with some friends from the area. I was delighted to see escargot on the menu, and promptly ordered them. They turned out just as nice as they were in France when I had them with the natorious Snapper in 1999. I have been looking for a restaurant that serves snails since the Snapper debarcle, so I was happy. The meal was 5 star. The wine list was spectacular, and Pablo will be interested to see that they were sellng magnum's of Chateau d'quem for $499. Of course a bottle like that wouldn't be worthy of corkage without Pablo and MH in attendance, so next time you are going to Colorado let me know. The Left Bank in Vail Colorado is the best French restaurant I have been too since France. ***** from me.

Beaver Creek, Colorado

Well I departed from the Big Apple after sitting on the runway for 1.5 hours because of bad weather. Never encountered that sort of thing before. They even started the movie " Sahara " while we were on the ground. The movie was quite good. It has Mathew McConnehey and Penelope Cruze as the main actors.
We landed in Colorado a bit late and after figuring out the airport, which happens to be the largest in land mass I have ever been too, I made it to Thrifty car rentals to pick up the Dodge Magnum. I drove 120 miles from Denver past Vail to Beaver Creek and checked into the Sheraton for one night. The following day we were meant to settle on a magnificent 7000 sq ft house and I was meant to be staying there right now. But I am now staying at the Bachelor Gulch Ritz Carlton as the vendor wants to settle on Monday. I had to change my airline tickets, as I was meant to get back to LA just in time for the Gregory Johnson and Ted Brown show at Renees on Sunday, but alas I will need to stay here till Tuesday. I have tried Elk and Buffalo since being here, both were nice. I found a local beer called FAT TIRE, Worthy of consumption. Colorado is very nice. Have you been here?

Empire State Building

After I went to Ground Zero, I decided that it was time to scare myself and ascend the Empire State Building.

I am not a particularly excitable person when it comes to being up the top of any tall buildings. Riaz can vouch for that after we went up the Space Needle in Seattle and I had to crawl to the bar on my hands and knees when the building swayed. After I got over the embarassment, I must say, that it was one of the best JD and cokes I have ever had to this day.

Anyways, after 9 years I decided it was time to do it again, but this time I was determined to keep my composure and quietly get some photographic proof and get the hell out of there. Well as I arrived I took a couple of exterior photos of the magnificent building. It was built in 1931 and I was thinking to myself that maybe the lifts are still original....Surely not? I found the way to the ticket center, it said $30 for the express pass which guaranteed fast travel up and down without waiting. The second option was $14 and wait my turn. I felt that to spend $30 to make myself ill would not be prudent, so I decided that I would spend the $14 like any other person and cherish the time ascending and decsending this marvel of the NY skyline.

Well unfortunately the line up was for 1/2 an hour and I had a business meeting, so I prudently went outside, rang Riaz and told him what I almost did, caught a cab up Madison Ave and arrived at my meeting just on time. I was looking forwards to a bit of a scare......I will have to do it another time. Off to colorado in the morning.

Ground Zero

I went downtown today to Ground Zero. For those of you who have not been here and seen it, it is an extremely large site and it is certainly eeiry to look at. It is hard to imagine what the people of NY had to go through when the idiotic terrorists took the place down. It is going to take years to rebuild. It took nearly 15 years to build the first two towers, and I am sure it will take at least 5 years this time. The NYPD were doing a demonstration and there had to be at least 200 Police cars driving around flashing their lights and bliping their sirens in respect of the Police and civilians lost on September 11th 2001. I am glad I came to see Ground Zero.

Election time

I read on Rodney Hide's web site today that the election in New Zealand is to be September 17th. Now it doesn't matter if you want your National, Labour or Green candidate to get in. It is impoant that you give Act your party vote if you want lower taxes, level headed policy, and Rodney Hide in parliament keeping Mr Winston Peters and everyone else to their word, on track and aligned. Don't be sorry after the election, make the right dcision before it. Give Act your party vote.

HOT in NY

I arrived...I found out that my ipod will last just long enough for the flight from LA to JFK. It is hot here, a lot hotter and more humid than LA. Tomorrow is due to be the hottest day of the year. They are predicting 94 degres F which is 34c. The property here is expensive. Hopefully tomorrow I will find something interesting. I want to visit the Empire State Building tomorrow after work, so hopefully there will not be another bomb scare like there was yesterday.

Saturday, July 23, 2005

Off to NYC shortly

I am off to NYC for a couple of days to look at property. From there I go to Colorado. I will not be taking my computer, but will update blog along the way as time and computers permit.

Sideways

I watched this brillant movie tonight. It is well worth a viewing if you get the opportunity. It is quite funny and is about 2 guys, 1 of which is getting married, and 1 or which is divorced. They go to north of LA an hit the wine tasting trails. It is a hoot. Watch it with a nice glass or red. As per the title, it is called Sideways.

NHL in full effect.

The Vancouver Canucks

TORONTO — According to Fox News. The NHL lockout that canceled last season came to an end Friday when the owners of the league's 30 teams unanimously approved a labor deal that clears the way for play to resume in the fall.

"Today our board of governors gave it's unanimous approval to a collective bargaining agreement that signals a new era for our league," commissioner Gary Bettman said at a news conference. "An era of economic stability for our franchises, an era of heightened competitive balance for our players, an era of unparalled excitement for our fans."

It also begins the era of the salary cap — the very thing the union vowed not to accept when the lockout began. But a majority of players supported the six-year agreement in balloting Thursday, with 464 of 532 (87 percent) voting in favor.

Under the new deal, players are guaranteed to receive 54 percent of league-wide revenues — projected to be between $1.7 billion and $1.8 billion next season. A portion of every player's salary will be held in escrow if it is determined that revenues are smaller, resulting in players receiving more than 54 percent.

Approval by the league's board governors Friday brings labor peace at last to the league, which has already lost one season, and turns the focus back to the ice.

All players that had existing contracts after last season, will have those deals cut by 24 percent.

A six-day window will begin Saturday, allowing teams to buy out signed players and not have those dollars count against their cap for next season.

With salaries and revenues directly linked, players and owners will need to be partners now more than ever to grow the game.

I cant wait to see the Ice Hockey games again. I am not ashamed to say that I support the Vancouve Canucks and I am expecting a great season for them.

Planning a trip to NZ

I am looking forwards to getting back to NZ for a couple of days early August. It is my friend Ambers birthday in Queenstown, so I will be spending some time in the South Island catching up with old friends. I will then shoot back to Auckland for a nice catch up with family and friends, and then back to LA. It will be good to see first hand how the election campaigning process is hotting up. I hope to see some serious ACT action in Epsom, and I expect to see lots of resistance from National and other parties.

I cant wait to have a steak and cheese pie, a 42 Below Feijoa and Apple Juice at Denim Bar in Parnell, and a home cooked roast chicken with my folks.

Will be lots of fun.

Heat wave

There is a heat wave here on the West coast of the USA at the moment. It is 82 degrees F or 28C in LA at the moment which is nice, but in Las Vegas Nevada it is 117F or 47C. You'd not want to have your airconditioner fail in Vegas today, at that temp you would very quickly dry out.

Just say no 2

According to the NZ herald today:

One of two celebrities caught up in a major drug case is overseas, and says he has no immediate plans to return to New Zealand and talk to police. I wonder why?

The former sports star has been named in court documents as a joint offender in supplying cocaine and cannabis but has not been charged.

The man was aware he had been implicated in the police operation.

"I've spoken to my lawyer and he has said not to comment. I need to sort out exactly what's going on." He needs to find a place like Argentina with no extradition agreements with NZ and start a new life there, unless he wants to get taken by Baba Boo at Mt Eden prison for a couple of years.

Asked when he would come home, the man said: "Not for a while. I really can't say anything until I've spoken some more to my lawyer."

The second celebrity has been named as a person who was supplied with Ecstasy by the alleged drug-ring leader.

He is also believed to be out of the country. Maybe both of these nimrods got wind of what was going down and hopped a jet out as soon as they could. Wonder when they left the country?

The case has sparked a frenzy of internet speculation about the people involved in the bust.....

Entertainment site biggie.co.nz warned members against posting names because it was illegal.

Auckland businessman Aaron Bhatnagar closed down comment on his blogspot after names were published. Some buffoon decided to anonymously publish the suspected names on his site. He very promptly removed them, and then whamo... The Herald mentions this in todays publication.

A property developer, restaurant manager, self-employed businessman and mechanic were among the people charged on Tuesday.

They are due back in court next month. Naughty boys... Bet they will be sweating like rap*&^s right now!

Just say no

A photo of two of the people involved, foolish nimrods.

A couple of Kiwi celebs have been caught with the wrong type of drugs in their possession. It appears that thay have been caught with some cocaine, ecstasy, and cannabis. A few others are involved, and it looks like it might wreck a few tv shows back there in NZ. Name suppression is in effect, but with everything floating around the internet these days I think most everyone knows who thay are already?
The shit has hit the fan.

The accused according to the NZ Herald:

* A 55-year-old company director alleged to be at the top end of the drug ring is facing 22 charges, including possession of methamphetamine for supply, possession of Ecstasy for supply, supplying Ecstasy, supplying cocaine, conspiracy to supply Ecstasy, conspiracy to supply cocaine, offering to supply Ecstasy and offering to supply methamphetamine.

* A 51-year-old property developer faces one charge of conspiracy to supply Ecstasy.

* A 31-year-old restaurant manager is charged with conspiring to supply cocaine.

* A 30-year-old mechanic is charged with conspiracy to supply Ecstasy, supplying Ecstasy and possession of Ecstasy for supply.

* A 39-year-old self-employed businessman is charged with conspiracy to supply cocaine and supplying Ecstasy.

* A 30-year-old man with no stated occupation is charged with possession of Ecstasy for supply.

* Sports celebrity A is listed on a charge sheet having "jointly offended" with the company director of supplying cocaine and cannabis. He has not appeared in court.

* Sports celebrity B is listed on a charge sheet as being supplied with Ecstasy by the company director. He has not appeared in court.

*
Nice mix of high-end features, easy usability

Beautiful, rugged, compact design

I am happy with this purchase..... SMILE.

ACT is needed for stability

According to Helen Clark, New Zealand Prime Minister.....

"I am getting feedback with people very concerned about ... the instability of New Zealand First/National Party coalitions -- been there done that. It was not a good experience for people," she said.

I tend to agree with her.....

ACT needs to be there to keep Winston on the straight and narrow... ACT will complete the package as long as NZ First does not flip flop and dare I say it; go left.....

Back to Manhattan and Colorado

I have to go to Manhattan next week to view some nice townhouses for sale. After I do that, I need to go to Beaver Creek in Colorado to settle on a magnificent home that the company will be purchasing. I have been busy traveling lately and it is certainly a magnificent opportunity I have to do so. I really really like Manhattan. I could live there I think.

What do you think of this topic? Should the US government allow this for the sake of finding cures for people with currently uncureable illness?

Adventure in Limo

I went with a group of people from work to a company called Property I.D in downtown Los Angeles. They sent a limo to pick us up and provided a nice lunch while explaining to us what they do and how they do it. They provide all the disclosures and facts that a prospective buyer would want to know about the property before buying that is in public records or should be known. It goes as far as determining if the property is in a flood, earthquake and fire zone, the various charges pending or due and if the property is in a slip zone. There is also maps and other disclosures. Now they may not be able to get everything all of the time so they back it up with a $20,000,000 insurance policy for each property in this litigous state. It was very interesting, and backs up the fact that in real estate in California you need to disclose disclose disclose.

Cooter says " Dont see the movie" ?

Now this is a contradiction to my last post. According to CNN, Ben 'Cooter' Jones says 'They trashed our show,' calling it "a sleazy insult."

Ben Jones, a former Georgia congressman who played the wisecracking mechanic Cooter on the popular series from 1979 to 1985, said profanity and sexual content in the film make a mockery of the family-friendly show.

"Basically, they trashed our show," said Jones, who read a script of the Warner Brothers movie, which is scheduled to be released next month. "It's one thing to do whatever movie they want to do, but to take a classic family show and do that is like taking 'I Love Lucy' and making her a crackhead or something."

On Wednesday, Jones wrote an open letter to fans on his Web site, urging them to stay away.

"From all I have seen and heard, the 'Dukes' movie is a sleazy insult to all of us who have cared about the 'Dukes of Hazzard' for so long," Jones wrote. "Unless they clean it up before the August fifth release date I would strongly recommend that true blue Dukes fans hold their noses and pass this one up."

A spokeswoman at Warner Brothers did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment on Wednesday.

"The Dukes of Hazzard" was a surprise hit for CBS, pitting "good-ol' boys" Bo and Luke Duke and their moonshine-running Uncle Jesse against the crooked politician Boss Hogg and his bumbling henchman, Sheriff Coltrane, in fictional Hazzard County.

Jones was elected to Congress in 1988 as a Democrat. He lost his bid for a third term in 1992 after his district was redrawn. He owns Cooter's Place, a "Dukes" memorabilia shop in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

Ahh.... I didn't realise that he was a Democrat.....Maybe it is a case of sour grapes because he wasn't offered a bit part in the movie? I will watch it anyways although I am really annoyed that Jessica Simpson is Daisy Duke. Yee Haa

The movie of the summer?

This summer, hide your bridesmaids. So warns the promo for this weekend's new movie, "Wedding Crashers", which is about a couple of bachelors who show up at weddings uninvited to prey on lonely bridesmaids and especially desperate female guests.

The movie cashes in on two common stereotypes about weddings: that women hate attending nuptials alone, and that men, realizing how vulnerable weddings make single women feel, use the occasions to their advantage.

Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are the stars of the movie, and the previews look very very funny. This looks like it will be a box office hit, and is certainly on my list of too see movies along with The Dukes of Hazzard which is to be released on August 5th.

Woo hoo.......

Horse on the menu

According to the NZ Herald, a restaurant in Hamilton has been getting abusive calls after serving horse...

Canvas restaurateur David Kerr received abusive phone calls in the wake of a story on Monday publicising his "Mr Ed is Dead" horse dish entry in this year's Monteith's Wild Food Challenge.

"It was pretty lively and disgusting and not comforting for the staff," Mr Kerr said. "There was swearing, cursing, horrible language and it prompted a call to the police."

But while wild horses couldn't drag some punters into his restaurant this week, others can't wait to dig in. Mr Kerr was buoyed by the sale of 10 meals on Monday night and a host of email inquiries.

"Some think it is appalling but others are really interested to give it a go and want to know where else they can buy it," he said.

Leading racehorse breeder Sir Patrick Hogan said he would be disappointed if horse took off as restaurant fare.

"I certainly won't be eating horse, that's for sure, whether it is from the Kaimanawa Ranges or thoroughbreds," he said. "I realise I eat lamb and beef but the animals I have mostly worked with are horses and I am passionate about them. There is no need to introduce a new meat product. If there was only one restaurant in Hamilton and it was his, I wouldn't sit at his table."

But Sandra Shearer, Hamilton spokeswoman for the International League for Protection of Horses, said although she would not eat it, she was not offended.

She noted horse meat was regularly used in foreign salamis and was popular pet food here.

I think that it is also popular in Germany....

I don't know would you eat it?

JPM wins the race

Juan Pablo Montoya claimed the race win at the British Grand Prix in his McLaren today. He managed to get past Alonso at the first corner and with exception of a few race leader changes with pit stops etc, he lead most of the way.
Giancarlo was in for 3rd position until he stalled the car after a pit stop. I bet there will be some car door slamming going on in the Renault camp right now.
Fernando Alonso is still leads in the points for 2005 and is in a good position to claim the Championship this year. Problem is that he has Kimi with the taste of blood in his mouth and 7 times world champ Michael Schumacher folling up behind, as you can see by the points board below.

Alonso claims pole at Silverstone

A large disappointment for Kimi and McLaren as his engine blew 7 minutes into the session. He claimed 2nd in qualifying, but due to the rules he will have to loose 10 positions for the beginning of the race and start at 12th position. This happened last week in France when he qualifyied in 3rd position and had to start in 13th due to engine failure. Now he did finish 2nd at France and he is very determined, so watch Kimi climb the ladder tomorrow at the English Grand Prix.

I notice that Jacques Villeneuve at Sauber put in a good qualifying effort and ended up in 11th position qualifying in front of both the Red Bulls and Williams BMW cars. He seems to have gained some confidence knowing that BMW has purchased Sauber and having another year in his contract with Sauber will give him a chance at some podiums next year. He qualifyed right behind 7 times world champion Michael Schumacher.

Bombs in London

It seems that there has been many terrible terrorist explosions in London shutting down the city and killing at least 33 people. I have called friends in London and they are all ok at this stage. It seems that the police are working hard to catch the killers within 24 hours. I hope that this is not the start of a domino effect.

Dubya crashes bike into policeman

AUCHTERARDER, Scotland... Accroding to CNN, President George W Bush collided with a British police officer during a bike ride Wednesday evening, suffering scrapes on his hands and arms that required bandaging, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

The officer, from the Strethclyde Police Department in Scotland, was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. He was treated and released, after an evaluation revealed no fractures, McClellan said.

Bush "visited" with the police officer for some time after the accident and asked White House physician Dr. Richard Tubb to monitor his situation at the hospital, McClellan said. The president was expected to call the officer later, McClellan said.

It looks like there may have been a bit of excited activity over there in Scotland. It is reported that the President was traveling at quite some speed....

Nothing like getting run over by George... Hope he had his insurance card on him.

Happy 4th of July

It has 60-foot high faces, eyes 11 feet across, noses 20 feet long, and mouths that stretch 18 feet and is visited by 2.5 million people a year... Mount Rushmore - located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The sculpted heads of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt were carved from a solid mass of granite. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum was commissioned in 1927 to carve the massive tourist attraction. It took 14 years to complete and cost a mere $1 million, and is now considered priceless.

Is ANZUS to be reformed?

USS Texas visiting Auckland in 1983

According to the NZ Herald: The United States is publicly calling for "comprehensive dialogue" with New Zealand to repair a relationship it implies has lacked trust and respect since the rift over anti-nuclear legislation in the mid-80s.

The call was made in a hard-hitting speech in Wellington last night by departing United States ambassador Charles Swindells - though he did not use the word "nuclear" once.

This looks like a slight policy change from the USA's point of view. I am sure that they still use the neither confirm or deny policy, so unless it is a diesel cargo boat I am not sure if NZ would allow the vessel in. NZ's law would need too, and should be ammended to at least allow nuclear powered vessels in. It is not the cold war anymore, and if a USS sub rolls in it does not mean that a Russian Typhoon class is tailing with it's weapons locked in on the US vessel. The only worry would be people trying to damage the vessel, which would happen if it was deisel, electric, or nuclear powered anyway.

I call upon the NZ government to get into these dialogues forthwith..... Resurect ANZUS and order 10 or 20 F16 while you are at it... If Labour doesn't I am sure that NATIONAL / ACT / NZ First will...

The New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act, 1987 bans nuclear weapons and nuclear-powered ships from entering New Zealand's territorial waters.

The Prime Minister may grant approval to foreign warships if she is satisfied they are not carrying nuclear weapons.

A great day for Renault at their home Grand Prix. Not so great of a day for Kimi as he has to start from 13th position because of an engine change after practice yesterday. McLaren is on top

Pedro de la Rosa was the only driver to dip under the 75-second barrier today at Magny Cours in the first two practice sessions of the French Grand Prix weekend. The McLaren Mercedes driver dominated the opening session of the day and then put in a blisteringly fast time at the end of the second session to give him the fastest two laps of the day overall. I cant wait till the qualifying and the race. Hopefully Michelen has got the tire situation organised this week....
