G8

Interesting photo, can you name all of the leaders? I hope that they managed to get down to business and get some serious work done.... It is entirely possible as Newt Gingrich says that we could well be heading into WWIII.....

That would not be good.

I would assume the G8 agenda has taken a bit of a back seat to the latest fracas in the mid east.
The only thing holding other nations back from wiping the floor with Israel is the large contingent of US forces close by in Iraq. I agree it could get very ugly, but I think calling it a lead up to WWIII is a little dramatic even for Gingrich.
Now lets all wait for the big oil conspiracy theories to start sweeping the internet...

Well if Iran go in head over heals then US will support Israel and then you may well find that the whole middle east turns into a firepit. I am hoping that Iran is not stupid enough to try and intervein or there will be a good excuse for the west to strategically strike a few little places that need taking care of.

Israel getting beaten by its neighbours?

I don't think so. They've tried that before and got their own clocks cleaned. Israel has the most powerful air force in the region (bar the USA in Iraq) , and the most mobile calvary force too. I suspect the fact that Israel is said to possess nuclear missiles also probably causes the more belligerent Arab nations second thoughts about attacking Israel.

If you have a look at FAS.org or other sites that assess capabilities of other nations military forces, you'll see that Israel is one of the most powerful states in the middle east. They may not have a massive standing army, but they do possess one of the most advanced and complete forces around.

Put it this way, Iran is welcome to a million man army. Whether they can do much more than carry a rifle within their own borders is the relevant point.

I agree Israel probably had nuclear warheads and WILL use them .They have threatened to do so in the past. They are a tough lot and they do know what they are doing.... I just hope that the USA and G8 countries amongst others are ready to back them up.

Iran will not take one step over the border of Iraq toward Israel. It would be a perfect excuse for the US to attack Tehran, something I am sure they would be very happy to do. But I do see Iran stepping up the flow of weapons and cash into Lebanon in support of Hezbollah.

Syria and Egypt could be wild cards in this, if they decided to reprise the Yom Kippur offensive, Israel would have a war on two fronts as well as incursions from Lebanon and the Palestine territories to deal with. I know Egypt has become a moderate country in recent years, but it has a growing element of hardline Muslims.

This is big and dangerous mess. Perhaps it will be a convenient excuse to attack Iran. Perhaps Gingrich is right and that we are on the verge of WWIII. He probably has more information available to him about the situation than we do.

It would appear the secretive 5th horseman of the apocalypse is not thermonuclear annihilation, but GW dropping the "s" bomb. I can't believe this is making more headlines than innocent people dying. Sad.

As for Gingrich, he is making noises about running for president, which is why we are seeing more of him all of a sudden.

Gingrich should not bother.... McCain or Guiliani or some young blood will suffice. I bet GWB's ratings go up now taht he said "SH*T" But you are right Rymann, people are dying and something best be done about it fast... The longer it last the worse the outcome.
