Petrol prices are out of control

When I first moved to Los Angeles in March 2002, the average price of gas per gallon was $1.50. With the higher octane fuels it was about $1.85. Everyone was shocked when it went over $2.... Well I filled up my car yesterday at $3.15 per gallon. It is getting out of control. The cost of a barrel of oil is around $71 today... If it gets much higher then I call upon George W Bush to open the US oil reserves and help us all.
The record high price seems to have hit the March 1981 historical high price of $3.08 per gallon (1981 price adjusted for inflation using 2005 dollars). Airline tickets are increasing, wall-mart's bottom line is getting scrubbed, and I dont like paying over $40 to fill my tank. Just as the automotive companies are bringing out some powerful vehicles, this happens.....crap.

Start drilling in Alaska boys.

Yes...But the US oil reserves are massive.... Could subsidise a bit by releasing some of it... Anyways.. Better then $150 per liter in NZ.

Now you people - take a deep breath and breathe through your nose. If the price of gasoline becomes outrageously high, people will start buying lighter, more fuel-efficient cars on their own, and the auto-companies will stop making gas-guzzlers. The market will take care of it.

It's called a free market at work.

Yes Ruth, cars with high powered engines already have better fuel economy than the cars of the 80's by a long shot. Hybrid cars are rampant in California. My car has good fuel ecenomy. It just costs a lot more to fill it now. I can understand that the SUV's the size of Everest that suck down fuel at 10 MPG need to be changed for the better, but fuel prices doubling in 3 years...PHEW.
